Museums

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a highly respected art museum situated in Richmond, Virginia. With an extensive collection of artwork from around the world, the VMFA strives to educate and enrich the lives of its patrons through various programming and outreach initiatives.

An absolutely amazing experience. It was raining so we couldn't enjoy the outdoors. It was so much to see. I would have to come back. Artwork and collections are beautiful. Definitely coming back!! A nice place for a date. Food served for a price the reflect the cost for buying from a museum.

100% recommend coming to this art museum! It is FREE and only costs $6 to park. What I like most about this museum is that there is an exhibit for everyone! Everything from Egyptian tombs to traditional paintings to contemporary art and even stunning jewelry and furniture. There is EVERYTHING here! I visited in January and had a fantastic time. I would recommend this place to anyone and plan to bring friends back. This is 100% the best art museum I’ve ever been to. I think it’s even better than the one in D.C. (way less crowded too). There are also tons of clean restrooms and a nice gift shop. You could easily spend 5+ hours here - it’s a spectacular museum.(10th time trying to post this review 🙄)

Victoria O'Tool — Google review

Amazing museum! Very family friendly and it has a surprising amount of art(50k pieces!). We spent a few hours there and still didn't see all of the art. Admission is free, but I would have paid to visit this place. There are Faberge eggs there! Definitely a must visit if you're in Richmond!

Clay Lanford — Google review

I've been going to the VMFA for 35 years and watching it grow has been kind of incredible. While it has had over the years some interesting and not so interesting shows that cost money to see, it's their permanent collections that really impress. We went on a recent Saturday and it was not crowded at all. We spent 2 hours looking and only got through the second floor in that time. The VMFA has a very varied collection, fine art of all periods, ancient antiquities, an elaborate silver collection, Faberge eggs and frames, Asian and African art, furniture, jewelry and all types of Tiffany pieces and art glass. You are allowed to photograph but no flash. It was free to get in but you need tickets to see some temporary exhibits that are visiting. This is the only place it seems lacking, most of these shows are of limited interest and not anywhere near as impressive as their permanent items. We had no problem with any staff. It would be nice if people visiting a museum knew had to act in public though. Talking loud, laughing, carrying on like they were at a mall and not a museum. Still the place is big enough that you can make the effort to avoid those people. The area around the museum is also very beautiful.

James Hampton-Snow — Google review

Museum has something for everyone. Great way to spend a day in downtown Richmond. The Faberge section was my favorite but also enjoyed the Egyptian items. Fiance is more into art and to see Picasso and Renoit in person is amazing. Gift shop has a lot of age different items to choose from, and Cafe for the munchies so you don't have to leave too soon. Plan to spend about 3 hours if you really want to appreciate it all. Cameras are allowed just without flash. Museum is free but tickets are needed for additional area such as the Samurai armor.

Great place to attend. New art. I love art. Art is part of me. If it's part of you, then visit this place. You won't regret it. I promise.

Derek Lewis — Google review

Impressive museum with collections from various cultures/time periods including Ancient Greek/Roman, African, American, Native American, European, and East/South Asian. However, what made this museum a little more special for me was the Art Deco/Nouveau section which is rarely part of the main galleries of the art museums.General admission is FREE which is great as you can really take your time and see part of the museum and then come back at another time to see the rest.In addition to the permanent collections they also do have ongoing exhibitions (some of them requires you to buy tickets).Sculpture garden is nice to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or have a bite at a nice day.Inside the museum masks are optional.Free street parking nearby or $6 museum parking.Overall an excellent experience - thanks everyone contributing the smooth operation of this museum, your work is really appreciated!

I am New to Richmond. I just moved here from New York. The Virginia museum of fine arts was my first outing as a resident. It was amazing. There is no way to cover it all in one day or even two! There is so much to see. It has so much to offer! I will be going back!

Michelle Ratner — Google review

This is a beautiful contemporary art museum. It felt very calming and peaceful as we walked through the galleries. Beautiful artwork and furniture collections from different time periods. Would love to visit again!

Kerri Ayala — Google review

This is one of my favorite museums (and I grew up going to the Smithsonian Museums all the time)! I always visit the Faberge exhibit, it is exquisite! The museum also allows and encourages photography, so have fun taking photos! There is also a nice restaurant and cafe if you need food or a pick-me up. And there's plenty of seating in the cafe, but also outside. The grounds of the museum are also worth visiting on their own. There were plenty of people lounging in the grass, working on their laptops in the shade, etc... It looks like the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Richmond.

Sohna Kunnath — Google review

So much more exciting than I expected! Lots of exhibits, many of which we didn’t get to. Free admission besides the specialty display downstairs. Fine art displays feature world renowned artists and their works. There’s a wide array of sculptures, artifacts, and paintings.

Maryam Shulgan — Google review

The VMFA is very nice museum , it takes about 3 hours to just look around. Found several my favorite artists artwork. They are amazing! The food there was also great!

HF Clara — Google review

Great place to come for some art! Beautiful old building to walk around in and explore all the wings with different types of art. Plus they usually have a special exhibit going on which is always worth checking out. Nice little cafe with some good coffee, various drinks and snacks to eat. The outside patio, garden and fountains on the grounds are great to sit around and relax in. They have a jazz night and various events that bring in the crowds which is a good time if you are looking for something to do. And as you can see from the pictures sometimes you can catch a majestic sunset here.

TheLeakingGenius — Google review

Highly recommend this art museum. To start off, it’s FREE, all I had to pay for was parking which was $5. Definitely worth it. They have such a wide variety of different types of art from all over the world and different time periods. My favorite piece of art was the Fabergé eggs. Really cool to see the different jewels they used to make them.

Mike T — Google review

I love the VMFA. With over 500,000 square feet of exhibition space on a thirteen acre campus, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has so much to offer. Whether your interest is ancient Egyptian art, Cubist paintings or Russian jewelry, this museum has something for everyone. There’s a cafe on the main level with outdoor seating that looks out over a reflection pond and the beautifully landscaped sculpture garden. The museum gift shop is large and full of all sorts of great artsy things. This is easily one of the best museums in the country. And it’s free! There is a parking garage, which does have a fee, but it’s possible to find free on street parking, as long as you don’t mind walking a block or two.I highly recommend a visit to this museum.

Haptown Robot — Google review

VMA is truly a gem of a museum. It has a top notch diverse collection that is wonderfully spaced out. You can leisurely view all the galleries without feeling overwhelmed or over saturated. The grounds and the outdoor sculptures are equally impressive. This is a must-see if you’re in Richmond.

Augusto Paulino — Google review

Beautiful collection with so many unique highlights - the furniture, Fabergé eggs, Tiffany lamps, just to name a few. The sculpture gardens out back are the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or read a book. And admission is free (some special exhibits are ticketed)!

Nora Weber — Google review

I am giving one star with a heavy heart. I was visiting family and we were all so excited to come visit the museum. Upon arriving we saw beautiful pieces of work. It was going great. About 10 minutes into our visit we were approached by a museum employee who told us to put our diaper bag on facing forward, they explained it was to keep the works safe from being knocked over. That made sense and we obliged. No problem. However, it would have been helpful if we would’ve been greeted at the front and given that information. But no harm. We carried on (diaper bag facing forward) through the galleries. We entered a long hallway area with paintings hung on either side. My niece (who is 1) was wriggling in my brothers arms. Since we were in a space with nothing that could be knocked over - He set her down and off she went, keep in mind she’s 1…so her run is the equivalent of a quick walk. We were on one side of the gallery and from the other side of the hall we heard booming yelling. It was so loud that it echoed and it was hard to hear what was being shouted. My sister in law took a few steps forward and a man appeared, she said to him “I’m sorry, what was that?”. Again, he yelled “NO RUNNING IN THE GALLERY”. We were too stunned to speak - he was so clearly absolutely furious. My brother scooped up my niece - at this point we were terrified to make another wrong move. It was SO deflating. We left shortly after this encounter because we felt totally unwelcome. I’m not arguing that the gallery should be treated like a race track - what I do think is that there was a more kind way to communicate with us. There were some amazing pieces but the staff at the Museum was incredibly rude and we left very disappointed. I have a fine arts degree, I’ve worked and shown work in galleries. I understand there’s certain etiquette - but I also understand how to communicate with kindness and grace. I hope that the staff, and specifically that employee learn and do better.

Sydney Ruiz — Google review

We went for it first visit and were excited to see works from Matisse, John Singer Sargent. It was wheelchair friendly, high quality art work from a high caliber art museum. It highlighted different artists from the Cubist, Impressionist and The Gilded Age. We will be back, we couldn't complete the museum in one visit. The visit is free, so don't worry about buying tickets. There is a cafe and coat check.

Kerry-Ann Parsons — Google review

First time visit we had a great time so much to see we're going to have to go back a couple more times for sure. There was art from all up and down the timeline and all over the world I found it very fascinating My teenagers also enjoyed it and that says a lot.

Willy — Google review

Beautiful, stunning, charming, peaceful, relaxing are just a few of the words that come to mind. Great for the family, great for dates, great just to get away. Kid friendly, wheelchair accessible, clean, well kept. If you are in the area go visit. Did I mention that it is free.

Johnny Mallory — Google review

Excellent place to spend quality time with family or significant others. There’s always a cultural event or exposition going on. On weekends they have an event called “Family Day” where you can bring kids to do paintings and other activities. They even give them a “passport” where you can have a stamp for each activity that they completed. And the best part: it’s free, you don’t have to pay. It worth a visit!

Gislane Almeida — Google review

My favorite sections were the India artifacts and information and the Russian artifacts (the eggs!!) What an awesome museum. Fantastic art pieces throughout as well... I would definitely go back!Only downside was that I felt American and French items were just paintings (tons of horses and abstract) or furniture while other cultures/countries had amazing artifacts, jewelry and paintings.

Latisha “Hungry Hiker Hodgepodge” M — Google review

What a beautiful experience!!! The art exhibits were well placed and easy to navigate. The museum environment in was well balanced, not crowded in any areas. I even had lunch in the Cafe. I've never had a bad meal in this place. The food is always so exquisite, fresh, and innovative. The staff was friendly & very attentive to my needs and they really go above and beyond to ensure you enjoyed your meal. I can't wait to go back.

Hope Duck-Duck — Google review

The Faberge collection here was phenomenal! I have visited the Armoury Museum in Moscow which contains some Faberge objects which belong to the Russian Government as well as the Faberge Museum in St. Petersburg, and I can easily say this was the best collection of Faberge I have ever seen. Not only did they have 5 of the famous Faberge Easter eggs, they had numerous large pieces of Faberge silver as well as many hard stone pieces including numerous carved animals and flowers. All were beautifully displayed and lit and easy to view in uncrowded spaces. They also had a beautiful Impressionist painting collection. And all for FREE! Highly recommend!

Ann Telma — Google review

This was our first time visiting the museum. My daughter loved that some of it was interactive. She took time to sketch her favorite piece. We found street parking and didn't enter through the main entrance. They don't allow you to wear backpacks on your back you have to hang it off the shoulder or wear it the front way.

ARLENE PATEL — Google review

I’m such a fan of the VMFA. I have a fond memory of seeing an impressionist exhibit as a high school student here, and it was the first time I realized I enjoyed art. I’m always impressed with the exhibits they manage to secure, and I never leave feeling disappointed. I would recommend getting the membership - it’s just not that expensive and if you see a few exhibits and use their parking garage, the membership easily pays for itself. I went to see an exhibit there last year and was lucky enough to stumble across a fashion show! Loved the energy and the artistry. Check their upcoming events - I feel like they’re always adding something new to the calendar.I wish I had more photos to add…I need to dig some up! It’s a beautiful building and they transform the space to enhance each exhibit.

Sally Houston — Google review

The VMFA had incredible collections from a variety of artists, periods and movements. Typically I have gone on week days and have never seen it very crowded at all. The museum itself is very beautiful and I would recommend taking some time to spend in the outdoor sculpture garden. Many amazing things to see.

Kalin D'Reaux-Rodgers — Google review

1st time there with my son's school. It was very interesting. Only took a few pictures as we were busy looking at so much. Definitely going back to see the samurai exhibit!

Island

Nature & Parks

Belle Isle is a city park in Richmond, VA that is known for its hiking trails, rocky shoreline and swimming areas. The island also has a suspended pedestrian bridge that takes you to Belle Isle Below, a walkway along which you can access the island's many outdoor activities in close proximity to downtown Richmond.

Worth going to if you like urban exploring. You can get to the hydro plant by going across the bridge.

Christina Connelly — Google review

The view is amazing, perfect combination between nature and the city.Clean, kids and pet friendly.

tatiana montesinos — Google review

Nice park that you can tell it well maintained. Worth a visit if in town.

David C — Google review

Belle Isle is a beautiful gem in the James River in downtown Richmond. Our family had been going here for three generations! It never gets old!

Kate Herr — Google review

Great walking and biking trails here. Not a ton of parking so might have to park on the street. Not just a nature path either. There are some cool structures to explore.

Matthew — Google review

Great option for a nice day out. Good exercise and opportunity for kids.

Heather Charles — Google review

I visited Belle Isle on a quick visit to Richmond on a cloudy day, and I can't say I found it to be worth the walk from Forest Hill. If you're into history and/or interested in hopping across the rocks in the river it's worth a visit, but I found Maymount and Church Hill to be much more interesting places for sight seeing.

Danielle Donnelly — Google review

Nice hiking spot with great view of the Richmond skyline in the background. There are multiple hiking trails/routes to choose from. There is a parking lot across the river and you can cross to the Isle using the hanging pedestrian bridge under the Lee bridge. If you are lucky, you might see some deers running around! Definitely recommended if you are visiting Richmond!

Han Stw — Google review

Great hike with views of the turbulent waters of the James river, as well as views of Richmond! The trail features a suspended walking ramp beneath a bridge for traffic, which offers the best views of the trail.

Klarysa Crape — Google review

Love all the walks through wilderness and the abandoned buildings are so cool. Went here for 2-3 hours and got a heck of a walk in, loved every minute of it

Valentino M.T. — Google review

Ideallic Autumn day exploring the island. Richmond might just have the best park system in the USA.

Z H Current — Google review

This was a wonderful find in the middle Richmond. It is such a beautiful place to visit. I thought I was only going to spend about an hour but I ended up spending the day. I would definitely suggest adding this to your trip a don't forget to bring a swimsuit.

MJ Moran — Google review

Awesome place to see a great view of the city and enjoy some warm weather! Parking can be somewhat difficult during warm weather. You may have some luck parking in Oregon Hill and making your way over from there. You will have the opportunity to learn some history during your visit. Just walk the path around the island. Check it out.

Episcopal church

Historical landmark

The Historic St. John's Church, built in 1741, is an Episcopal church located a few blocks away from Sub Rosa in Richmond. It is famous for being the site of Patrick Henry's iconic "Give liberty or give death!" speech during the American Revolution in 1775. The city boasts many historically significant buildings and has made efforts to preserve its history while also developing and staying progressive.

The history here...oh man super important a must for anyone in Richmond to visit!!

Darin Partterson — Google review

I attended the reenactment and tour. Both were well done and professional, but the reenactment was very incredible and the acting was superb. It was neat sitting among the reenactors and "participating" in the Virginia Convention. I highly recommend making this a part of your 4th of July experience.

Wes Morgan — Google review

We attended the reenactment and it was one of the highlights of our trip, if not the highlight. The performance was just incredible. I was completely taken back to 1775. I will definitely be visiting again in the future.

Kyle Davis — Google review

So beautiful. What an honor to be able to walk the grounds of a landmark so rich in history. It was this very spot where it was decided that the fight for American freedom from Britain would be worth the sacrifice to fight back. That's patriotism! If you're offended by American pride, then you likely don't know enough about American history.

Halestorm — Google review

If you like history and are in Richmond, this is a must stop. We had an awesome lecture about Patrick Henry and the lead up to the war. The church is beautiful, too.

Cemetery

Sights & Landmarks

Hollywood Cemetery is a beautiful, historical cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Famous people such as two American presidents, six Virginia governors, and two Supreme Court justices are buried there. It's also a popular tourist destination with great views of the river and city skyline.

I absolutely love visiting cemeteries! This one definitely wowed me. So much history and it is beautiful! Photos do not do it justice! If you’re ever in the area give it a visit!

Amber Carroll — Google review

Google maps directed us through some weird streets but finally got us there. Located on the banks of the James River with hills, valleys and large trees, this garden cemetery is a beautiful and serene place to walk around. Various tours are offered here, but self guided tours can be taken by downloading a map or getting a map from the visitor center for $1. This is the burial place of two Presidents of the United States and 6 Governors of Virginia. There are many headstones that are works of art. We also came across some animal statues beside a few headstones.

Seeta — Google review

Finally fulfilled my lifelong dream of seeing David Brockie's grave. I had a moment where I transported through space and time and felt really connected to the punk and metal scene in Richmond. Additionally, the cemetery itself was really beautiful and well taken care of. Lots of history and great place for a snack. Would be buried here. Worth the trip. Hail Oderus.

Mike Kennedy — Google review

Simply serene. Beautiful riverside cemetery that has lots to contemplate. It is welcoming but invites personal exploration and contemplation. Dogs are welcome.

Jean Westcott — Google review

Very peaceful and historical cemetery. You can choose to walk or drive through. Some of the paths are pretty steep.

Shannon Wheeler — Google review

If there is only one historical cemetery you ever visit in your lifetime, it must be this one! It is vast, extensively, beautifully landscaped, and tended to meticulously. Park-like in its atmosphere, it feels more like an outdoor museum of sorts, as people walk the myriad paths for exercise as well as to browse the many headstones, monuments, and mausoleums, old to newer. The views of Richmond are picturesque, and you can drive thru the cemetery if you don't wish to walk. It is immense, so my folks and I drove along and stopped where we chose to get out and view graves as we went. This place is a must see!

Ronna Richmond — Google review

Hollywood Cemetery is beautiful and well-maintained. It only has one entrance/exit that wasn't locked, which didn't register in Google when we were trying to exit. If you're going to walk here, bring a water bottle. It's very interesting to see people that were important to Richmond's history, the gravestones are mostly clear and legible, and the walking path is smooth. It's a little hilly, which looks lovely, but keep it in mind if you've got poor knees. You're able to drive the whole park if walking it isn't an option for you.

Lukas G. — Google review

Went to visit historical sites and teach my kids about American History. We enjoyed our time there and the kids were more interested in the Richmond Vampire W.W. Pool but they did learn a lot! We also got to see deer running through the cemetery

C Ware — Google review

Beautiful cemetery. Went to see the Presidents' burial places. Monroe and Tyler.

Sarah Harris — Google review

Photos do not do Hollywood Cemetery justice, ditto, as so many others have said the same thing. Leave your car at the entrance and just wander under the canopy of trees. You will not be able to see the whole place in one visit so just enjoy the time you do have to wander, to read the headstones, to see the care and love given to the selection of each site. It is very hilly and you will lose your breath, but you won't regret walking.

Irma Almazan — Google review

I think this is a must visit in Richmond. Beautiful grounds and the views from near Presidents circle of the river and city are unmatched. Cemeteries usually freak me out but the feeling here is somehow more upbeat. There is a ton of history there and the visitors appreciate it. I encourage anyone to give it a visit, preferentially in the daytime, I am not brave enough to traverse these hollowed grounds in the dark.

Joseph Moran — Google review

A beautiful place to lay loved ones to rest. This is by far the coolest cemetery I have ever seen. We drove for almost 2 hours to visit. Iy's a shame it was raining the entire day but we still walked around and explored this enormous place. I feel like my words do it no justice so I will end this here. May all those souls rest in peace.

The Virginia State Capitol is a historical monument displaying early-republican and Palladian architecture. The building was completed in 1788, and is the oldest continuously operating legislature in the Western Hemisphere. The Capitol is located in Richmond, Virginia and is the seat of government for the state of Virginia.

Great tour of a historic building with intriguing art work and statues. Must enter on the West entrance and parking is not close by. Parking is available in and around the Capitol area but will require walking at least a few blocks and likely using a mobile parking app. Walking around the grounds is nice as well and you can see the governor’s mansion.

Andy Stickel — Google review

100% recommend visiting the Virginia State Capitol, but make sure you find the entrance! The entrance is on the sidewalk and goes below the Capitol to enter!I visited over a month ago and learned so much, and had an amazing time. The guided tour was fantastic, and my guide was extremely insightful and kind. I did the last tour of the day on a weekday and was only 1/2 people on the tour.10/10 would go back!

Victoria O'Tool — Google review

Absolutely gorgeous Capitol building, rich in history and architecture. The grounds and building are well maintained. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Most of the building is open to roam. A fun visit.

Sarah Hartman — Google review

Very disappointed with this visit. I emailed ahead for a tour on my way through Richmond. I was told that free toors are offered on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm with no reservations needed. Parking is nearly impossible to find in the area, but we managed. Downtown was a ghost town on a Saturday, at mid-day. Most restaurants were closed, even the Subway. The capital building is under renovation and the main West face of the building is obscured by scaffolding and a huge mound of dirt. We saw no way in, so we walked the entire perimeter of the building and never found a way in. No special instructions for entering the building were provided when I emailed. The experience was very disappointing, as my time was limited in the capital and I was not able to tour the building, even when contacting ahead of time. The grounds were very nice with multiple sculptures and some flower beds. I managed to get a few pictures that did not include the construction zone.

Lois Petersen — Google review

My TOP TIP: If you have an hour to spare, avail of the free tour on the second floor. This provides a historical context to all the fascinating artifacts, marble sculpture, and architectural details; you get a deeper appreciation of the place. Mrs. Snellings, the tour guide, is a great storyteller and a wealth of information.

Augusto Paulino — Google review

Fine tour given by docent Mary Nix! Splendid Xmas trees, decorations, chandeliers and beautiful portraits of Presidents, Governors and more. Rich history! Worth a visit!I had a great tour of the state capitol yesterday at 3pm. A gentleman gave a good history of the area, architecture, delegates, senates, Thomas Jefferson and much more of ancient Virginia! It is a free tour offered every day and it is worth a visit ✨️ 😊

Kappu Srivats — Google review

For being just a state capitol building, it definitely was much more imposing than I imagined - both from an exterior and interior point of view. Worth a walk through just to take a peek.

The Robert E. Lee Memorial is a large equestrian statue of Civil War General Robert E. Lee that was erected in 1890. The monument is located on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, and is a popular spot for locals to lie out on sunny days, jog, or walk their dogs.

Very beautiful. A sobering reminder of the lives lost during the civil war and very humbling to see. Unfortunately due to newly proposed legislation, statues and monuments such as this one may not be around much longer. So if you want to see it I would go see it soon. I saw the R.E.LEE monument in New Orleans before they tore it down. Saddening however I'm glad I was able to see it.

The Poe Museum preserves and showcases the life and works of famous literary master Edgar Allan Poe, who is also known as America's Shakespeare. The museum features a variety of manuscripts, letters, first editions, and other memorabilia from his life as well as providing a retreat into early nineteenth century Richmond.

Amazing hidden gem right here! In the heart of Richmond, this museum has so much to offer. It’s in a small historic building and has way more than you’d think in terms of information and artifacts related to Edgar Allen Poe. They even have two cats that roam the property — one is even named Edgar! They have an option to do an audio guided tour and it is so worth it! All you need is to scan their QR code and it will bring up the audio tour — just remember to bring headphones. I learned so much from this museum and can’t wait to return. Their gift shop is great too with lots of options in a wide variety of price ranges so you don’t have to break the bank. Admission is only $9 for adults, but if you are active duty military you get to get in for FREE! Highly recommend this place if you are a history buff, poetry lover, or Edgar Allen Poe fan!

- nice museum with some cool history.- tickets $10 per person and you can do self guided tour or take a guided tour.- can see some pretty cool items that Poe had owned.- tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.- have two black cats that hang around the area. Edgar and Pluto they both are very nice kitties.Have a cool gift shop and most of the items are super affordable.- overall a must see if your love everything Edgar Allan Poe. Highly recommend this place.

Visiting this museum was absolutely amazing. I never even knew this existed. My partner is into weird and quirky places and this place definitely fits the bill. The museum is very well laid out and I love the way the tour is self guided. I learned a lot about Edgar Allan Poe today. The grounds of the museum are absolutely beautiful and there is also a lot of history here. If you were ever in Richmond, I definitely recommend checking it out. Also, they have a very clean bathroom here. while you’re here. Make sure you use the bathroom as well. You will not regret it.

Who wasn't asked to read Edgar Allen Poe as part of their American Literature classes! This museum lets you get to know a little bit more about Poe, the child, the man. There are some great artifacts housed at this museum, including the last trunk Poe had with him when he died. Really a cool place for those who like this author.

Was a small and quick self guided museum tour but it was only $10 bucks. Had some interesting stuff to read and look at. Also has some stuff that was really random. Just one of many places he lived during his life. The gift shop was nice and had some fun stuff. I think it’s worth it for any Poe fan.

Neat museum dedicated to Edgar Allen Poe. Until recently, I didn't realize he had such close ties to Richmond. The site may be small, but there is a lot to see and learn. Great collection of items, and a convenient self-guided tour is available on their website as well. Lovely garden and a pair of pleasant feline companions round out the presentation. The staff is friendly. The fun gift shop had a great selection of souvenirs. Pair your visit here with a stay at the Linden Row Inn, which also has historical location connections to Poe.

Detoured on our trip to Salem MA to visit The Poe Museum. Well worth the time spent! Absolutely beautiful buildings and courtyards - an oasis in a bustling area. The exhibits are very informative and the reading room is cozy and thought-provoking. You must visit if you are a Poe fan.

Such a neat spot! We wanted some local history and this was conveniently located next to our other adventures. I love the balance of informative but not boring. Beautiful museum, neat little grounds to walk around, would recommend!

I think it’s a little small. For the price of entry. All the information was well thought out but I feel like it’s not worth the price. Ambiance is 100. Information was great but all went by too quickly. Also ac is amazing and it was very cool the entire time.Edgar the cat was a funny moment.

Very well done self guided museum tour. The houses are small but everyone waited their turn. Really nice museum with so much interesting information on our favorite horror poet. My family and I had a great time. There is limited parking at the side of the building. The gift shop is small but the staff is friendly and so helpful. Definitely taking out of town visitors here.

Welcome to the macabre of Edgar Allen Poe! You will leave with a greater appreciation of this legendary poet, whose life is an enigma. Enjoyed seeing the personal artifacts and reading about this brilliant mind. Even the garden grounds stir the imagination - and be sure to pet the friendly black cats! A must stop for anyone visiting Richmond. Nevermore!

I am very biased, Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors. I thought this museum was incredible. Amazing artifacts tied to the troubled author. The grounds are beautiful and fit the aesthetic of what I think when I think of Poe. It is $10 and there is a small parking lot on the side of the building for visitors.

A really beautiful and enchanted place. Buildings around a garden light up the childhood, the work and the late years of E.A. Poe. The place is a little creepy, as it should be, creaking doors coffins and black cats. A nice gift shop is well sorted. Parking possibillity on the streets.

Manuel Girisch — Google review

I love Edgar Allen Poe. He suffered a lot in his life especially towards the end and this museum has absolutely everything you would ever want …and not want to know about his life. It’s a truly beautiful place and the gift shop is so well thought out as far as the products they sell are really relevant towards his dark style. I love the premature burial and I even got to take coffin photos! Definitely will be back to experience all over again.

I took my book and history loving teens to this museum and they loved it! They enjoyed meeting the cat, reading in the upper floors, and learning about the many facts about Poe! Thank you for a great time

C Ware — Google review

Worth it! It’s amazing how much of his life they have preserved. Not all the items are on exhibit either and the employees told me the curator sometimes rotates different items and often has lectures. Even the bathroom fits the theme.Poe doesn’t get enough credit sometimes and it’s interesting that a lot of what we “know” is false between his self righteousness autobiography and the erroneous biography written by his enemy. Despite a sign saying not to touch the busy in the courtyard, it’s covered in red lipstick marks…

This was a fun experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, or if you're just looking for something to do in Richmond during the fall. The audio tour taught me a lot about the life of Poe, especially his early life, which I didn't know much about. The audio tour is done on your phone (you scan a QR code), so bring headphones! It's also helpful that the audio tour doesn't have to be listened to at the actual museum. So, if you're in a hurry, you can listen to The portions you want at the museum, and listen to the rest later. The garden is also pretty, and the gift shop has some fun items!

If you appreciate American Literature and in particularly E.A. Poe, this is a must-see. I was impressed with the museum's collection of artifacts and the telling of the author's time in Richmond.I appreciated the even handed reporting of Poe, his uneven career, and personality. His troubles were many, some brought upon by himself, and his joys fleeting. Poe is more than an icon, but very human...the Museum makes that clear.Nearby parking and dining venues make it a pleasant visit.

It was fine. I'm not a huge Poe fan, but it was interesting learning about his life. The museum provides a scavenger hunt for kids, but it's not for younger kids who can't read or write. Even with the scavenger hunt pamphlet, it was still super difficult to keep the kids' attention while the adults wanted to read. Also, the audio tour is great, but if you don't have earbuds, everyone is going to hear your phone or you'll hear others'. The spaces aren't big, so it takes a bit of maneuvering to get around to the exhibits. Overall, if you are a Poe fan, you may enjoy. It wasn't really for me.

Alyssa Allen — Google review

I’m a huge Poe fan, and I have plenty of Poe related tattoos to prove it. With that being said, we made the trip to Richmond, and visited the museum on a Sunday morning. I’m not sure how other days of the week are, but parking was a breeze. We were able to park in the gravel lot right next to the museum. We strolled the grounds for a couple of hours, taking photos and reading about everything there. It’s such a peaceful place, where you can actually feel Poe’s presence amongst everything on display. Check out their website before going. It’s a smaller place, and not The Met, but there are still plenty of things to see and learn. I wish the Gift Shop had more original things for sale. Most are things you can find online, or even make yourself.

We went to the Poe Museum as it's noted as one of the better museums about him. We were not disappointed with a big selection of artifacts to check out and even met the resident kitties! We were there for close to an hour and saw what we wanted to see. The gift store had a nice selection of items. Highly recommend!

Nick Pernot — Google review

This experience was absolutely amazing! This place has the most artifacts and clothing first additions that were owned by Edgar Allen Poe. It holds more artifacts than the entire world of Poe. This was his actual home and where he did his famous writing.

My wife and I visited this local attraction, and we absolutely loved it. There is an audio guided tour so be sure to bring your headphones. It is a small attraction but a can’t miss one. The gift shop has some interesting souvenirs, and you will have ample opportunity to take pictures of yourself in the garden, the library and of course a nice standup coffin.

The perfect punctuation to our trip to Richmond. I have long enjoyed the fruits of Poe's artistic labors and fascinate in the life and death he led. The best thing about this museum is that it is not merely a display of Poe-related artifacts, but it is an exploration of the man and the mind we adore.Bonus points for the two friendly black cats on the property.

Thoroughly enjoyed my time at this museum. Great gift shop and the two ladies watching the front were very nice. The self guided tour was filled with facts. Several, I had never heard. Thank you to the team keeping up with the museum. And Edgar, the little black cat running around, made me chuckle.

Maymont is a 19th century estate located in Richmond, Virginia which is open to the public for tours and events. The estate features beautiful gardens and a wildlife center which hosts animals found in nearby rivers and bay.

Wow, such a nice day outing. This botanical garden is free to enter, has farm animals, several gardens, and much more. Saw ton of people taking wedding/senior pictures and having picnics. We arrived at 3pm on a Friday and the parking lot was packed but we were able to find the last one. I do believe there is street parking though. There are also public restrooms here. It's a hugh place so although there were a lot of people, we walked around freely without feeling crowded. If you enjoy botanical gardens, you'll be glad you check out this place.

Beautiful piece of history. I visited the mansion with family based on a recommendation and I enjoyed my visit. The house itself is very dark and moody, but in a very historical way. Definitely recommend making a visit! Especially to see the beautiful Tiffany glass, it’s the highlight of the home.

Ismaeli Rodriguez — Google review

The staff were genuinely lovely and happy to chat, the grounds were wide-ranging, extensive and easy to get lost in and the house itself was both interesting and well-explained by the audio guide which very, very delicately tried to thread the needle between telling you the history of the house and exquisitely dancing around some of the details of the history of the house, but that's kind of par for the course in this sort of place. Definitely worth visiting if you should happen to be in or around Richmond and looking for a bit of a wander in the open.Just don't trust the guidebook map, because I swear that thing was laughing at me every time I got turned around. ^_^

Maymont is just beautiful- we went in April and everything was in bloom. The grounds are extensive, so plan on a lot of walking as well as taking some steep steps to reach the lower river area which is a perfect picnic spot. Great place for kids too as they’ll enjoy seeing the animals and having numerous fields to explore. Can’t wait to go back!

This is a 100 acre estate run by the Maymont Foundation and greatly supported by visitor donations. This is a grand historical estate with plenty of activities to do. You will burn calories just from walking around this rocky hillside park. The park is open to the public, but suggests a $5 donation upon entry. There are other charged options like the Mansion Tour. The grounds are well maintained and family friendly. Picnics are strongly encouraged. There is an Italian garden, a Japanese garden, an aviary, a petting farm, the Mayont Mansion (which was closed for the season)and a learning center (which was closed for the season). I missed season opening by a few days. At this time, a few flowers like daffodils are blooming. None of the fountains are up and running when i visited. I am sure this park is amazing more into spring. You can easily spend a whole day here. Well worth the stop.

John Hannan — Google review

I wish the ponds were clean and at least the ponds have water in the Japanese garden and Italian garden. It was cool to see wildlife freely roaming. Also no bathrooms or benches near the Japanese gardens. Both the waterfall and cascade had no water which was a missed opportunity.

It was beautiful!! It's not very handicap friendly, but I tried to take on the garden. *The garden won. 🤫 I let the girls go. They really enjoyed the beauty of the place. Got a few pictures. It was super nice and cool in the shade. The model was very professional and vibrant!! Our model is wearing a flowing dress and her favorite shoes. I definitely suggest wearing sneakers... and an oxygen tank. A really nice guy in a golf cart gave me a ride back to the entrance because I'm old and fat. I DIDN'T DIE!! I did a lot of praying to make it back to my car. Here's some pictures and my breathtaking model!! Enjoy! I know this review is late because we went on a Saturday. I need time and life-support to recover. They had live music, but that didn't start until 6 pm, and we live in Norfolk!! I'm not driving at night! Trees, sasquatch, and probably aliens come out at night!! Don't act like trees are innocent!! I'll end my rant here. 10 out of 10 will let my husband take the kids back. If I have to go, I'm waiting in the car or near the entrance. GO WILD!

I had a great time visiting Maymont! I recommend doing the audio tour, because the information provided really enhances the experience of walking through the mansion and gardens. The Italian and Japanese gardens are also worth checking out! FYI, there will be a lot of walking down stairs and down hill to get to the Japanese garden, so plan accordingly if you're still recovering from leg day.

Great place to take your kids after school during the week. Great walking views even if you don't interact with animals. Also, a great place for a date. We enjoy Glow Garden in the fall season the best.

This was a beautiful park that is free and open to the public. Certain things do cost money on a per diem basis but to explore the park, walk through the various gardens, listen to music, or participate in the activities hosted by the park are all free. The park is quite large so make sure you bring comfortable clothes, shoes, and water. There were several ideal places for an intimate or small family picnic too. Parking was free where we were, but limited so street parking may be needed. I did not see anyone on bikes or scooters so I am not sure if these things are prohibited or not.

This is one of my favorite parks in the country and I've traveled a lot. I really love this place, I cannot stress this enough. There are tons of terrain options if you like a moderate workout.Wildlife is abundant and easy to observe, most of them will not run away from you in my experience. The park is very large and is a good hangout or picnic spot. Entry is free with a suggested entry price of $5 at the gate. Please donate to keep this park looking great 👍

We spent about $32.00 to walk through the living creature center and the mansion. ($8.00 per adult )… I would totally recommend the mansion was a good hour and half of our time…. The park is so huge and beautiful we petted at the petting zoo. Will return to see all we missed last adventure.

This is easily a must see spot when in Richmond. It’s kid friendly, family friendly, a great place for date and even for book reading! If I went to vcu this would easily be my study place. So much to see and explore here. The farm land is so great for kiddos, they get to feed the furry animals. The Japanese garden is a must see too, with ponds and lily pads and beautiful foliage. If you want to see vibrant flowers head to the Italian garden. There is so much photo ops here! The ultimate plus is this place is free.

The Maymont Garden Glow is beautiful! The lights along the trails are just gorgeous. Food trucks, hot chocolate, and fire pit areas are so good and cozy. Cute things for kids to do and the carriage house was open to view various types of carriages from throughout history.

This is such a lovely place to go. It was so peaceful to walk thru the different gardens. The house wasn't open, as you have to schedule a tour. But it was still very nice and a lot to see for free.

I love this place, I usually go with my grandson he gets to run and climb the trees like we see others doing. There's animals, the Japanese, and Italian gardens to wonder thru, then we find our favorite tree and spread out a blanket, and enjoy a picnic while listening to some music. This will be our forever place to visit. Donations are accepted.

Always a favorite. Walks(exercise) sight seeing, animal sights. If you are craving the zoo, come here, the take donations but it's free. You do have to pay for the indoor aquarium but it's worth it to me. Feed the animals in the children's farm or just walk around and spot the animals along the trails. Fun fr everyone. Sometimes they have vendors here.

The Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site preserves the life and work of America's first African-American bank president. The site features exhibits about Walker's life and work, as well as her historic home which is adjacent to the museum.

This is a small visitor center with some great rangers. Enjoyed chatting with one of the rangers about the local history and she gave directions for how to tour the area with the NPS app. This was a terrific walking tour since it covers a large part of the Jackson Ward. Enjoyed learning about the entrepreneurial spirit of the African American community in the Victorian era especially Maggie Walker. But the rest of the community was just as active and supportive. Definitely recommend if you're interested in Black history. Very educational.

I'm amazed I've never heard of Maggie Walker before but learning about her incredible life had me stunned. Fantastic lady who had a fantastic house. The staff are fantastic as well. Super knowledgeable and friendly. The tours are every hour except noon and take roughly an hour to see everything. I happened to be the only person on my tour so the poor guide had to put up with all my questions. Definitely recommend going if you're interested in the history of Richmond. Also it's free admission.

Wow-I knew nothing about the history of Maggie L. Walker. Such an inspiration and empowering. We need to know about Black History and the women who changed history and paved the way for others. The tour guide, Gabriele, was knowledgeable and friendly! I recommend this 1.5 hour tour to everyone.

This is a National Historical Site showcasing Maggie L Walker's contribution to African-Americans There is a small visitor center with just a bit of displays. Access to the actual house is available only with the ranger tour. It' in the middle of Richmond, VA. If you are nearby, it's a good visit to spend an hour or so to learn about Maggie Walker.

I visited this home about four years ago when it was completely open. This time I went with my sister and her husband. We drove down second street to the entrance to the park and had to drive around two times before finding a parking spot on the street. The first floor is open now but you need a reservation. We didn't have one and it was close to closing time. The ranger gave us a quick tour for which we are extremely grateful. Her house is furnished with period furniture that she owned of a high class. It's well worth the time to visit. She also had a private elevator installed in her as she couldn't walk.

What a wonderful experience we had here. All the Rangers on duty were so friendly and helpful. The video shown before the tour was excellent. We had been on many tours, but this tour, hands down, was the best we have had in a long time! Thank you so much for making this National Park one of our favorite places!

Visited in December 2022 the week between Christmas and New Years. Parking is on street only. Had to do one lap to find a spot. There is signage on where to go. Main entrance and inside court yard area. Small exhbit area with store front. There is also movie room with 20 min video which is a must before starting tour. Tour happens right after movie which they show every hour except noon from opening to closing. There is a junior ranger program here specific for Maggie Walker National Historic site along with special cancellation stamp if you collect those. They do have their own collectable token as well. The movie was very interesting and we all learned alot. Then the tour of the house was best. Ranger who gave the tour (also DnD enthuist) was amazing and enteracted with our kids (13, 10 and 7). She explained the history of the house and the additions and the items inside which were original and belonged to Maggie Walker. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town. We spent maybe 90 mins and alot of it was interacting with the rangers and completing the junior ranger program. I would guess most people wouldn't spend more than an hour here total. Worse part was probably trying to find parking. There was one other family that toured with us and also at the time of our visit the mask mandate was reinstated so all NPS in Richmond required masks.

David Lieu — Google review

Why aren’t we taught about people like this while in school? The site is easy to find, but you will drive right past it if you are not paying attention. Finding a parking space (on street) was a little of a chore due to the busy neighborhood, but not too bad. The Ranger was EXCELLENT! She made everything such a pleasure & a lil more interesting. Note: The Park Service still requires you to wear a mask.

Our tour guide was very helpful, and answered all our questions. The staff at the visitors center (I believe his name is Mike) were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

The guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. The house is well preserved and it's like you're transported back in time. The tour is about an hour long and the kids can do activities in their junior park ranger booklet throughout it. Recommend this historical site to people looking to get their history fix in Richmond.

Well preserved home of one of the Richmond social and cultural giants. The rangers are informed about Maggie Walker's life and times, making the tour a valuable experience. The visitors center has a film about her and a gift shop.

We drove to Richmond just to do here this weekend. It was a great stop for a 3 year old and her family. Not too big to induce fatigue. Lots of cool animals swimming around and a great description of the James River watershed. And they have an otter. You can't go wrong with an otter. After you explore the museum, take the adventure outside and see the rest of Maymont.

Dan Frosaker — Google review

My daughter and I loved this place. The staff where very knowledgeable and nice. My daughter loved climbing and exploring the exhibits and of course learning about the different types of animals.

Erica McLaughlin — Google review

We visited when we came to see the Maymont area yesterday. There really wasn’t much and we both felt as though the Nature center itself was over priced and small. There were 5 of us to pay for so almost &40. We were hoping to see otters (didn’t care if they were active or not) but there weren’t any, at least not visible. We were hoping to see some hands on animals like the photos others shared here, none were offered. The rest of the aquatic animals were neat and cool to see, just a tad expensive for not much. The play center in the center of the building was pretty cool and the kids loved that the most. But we were in and out of here in less then 30 minutes.

It was an awesome nature experience...Took the family out to enjoy a lovely afternoon and that we did...Seeing the bisons 🦬 was the highlight of the visit. These majestic beasts were just fascinating to see , they were just casually grazing across the landscape... wow...Didn't get to see much of the black bear as I believe it was feeding time, and I guess that's all that mattered to it at the time. Never mess with a hungry bear 🐻 👀.Was pretty much the same for the fox, the cows, and the bobcat, patiently waiting for the afternoon meal 😋...After about a 2-hour stole, my family and I appreciated the green space and the effort the city has poured into the upkeep and beautification of the Center.Ps. Would be nice if a couple of rabbits 🐇 were included in the petting section, though. If they are, then I might have missed them...

Teacher Wright — Google review

The set up was great; staff was super friendly. The kids LOVED the jungle gym tower in the middle of the center; they spent more time in that then they did looking at the animals

Lauren Taylor — Google review

The nature center is a great place to bring the whole family on a rainy day in Richmond. The worst part of this experience was that the ramps at the entrance were not ADA compliant. The ramps lead to a drop off, the end of the sidewalk. It's not handicap accessible nor stroller friendly. This needs to be amended for future guests immediately. Otherwise, my group had a blast with the interactive learning elements and loved watching the waterfall. There were a few animals that excited my group, fish, tortoises, and the otters. Unfortunately, the otters were asleep for the duration of our visit. The climbing structure seemed clean and sturdy. The river pool display was fun for younger ones to crawl into and over. When it came to souvenirs, none of the selections seemed relevant to what was in the nature center, no fish or otter themed items were available at the time. The souvenir coin machine was out of order at the time of our visit.

Mimi McCloud — Google review

The gardens here are absolutely beautiful! There were a bunch of different gardens throughout the property. We especially loved the Japanese garden and the little herb garden. Lots of places to enjoy nature and take pictures. There was even a quincenera party taking photos. We also saw a bunch of families bringing picnics and enjoying them on the lawn. We are definitely going to do that next time. To enter the park, there is no fee, just a suggested donation to help them care for the gardens.

Lexie Gee — Google review

First time visiting since the remodel. It's very nice, seems geared for younger kids but my 10 yr old still enjoyed it. The large aquariums are the same and there are some additional smaller tanks that have been added. There is a play area for toddlers and a large leaf thing for kids to climb. It was a tight squeeze for my kiddo but she's pretty tall. There were also some interactive tables to click around on. We went through it pretty quickly but it was a fun place to go on a chilly day. We went on a Friday around 2:00 and pretty much had the place to ourselves

Misty Stout — Google review

Wonderful experience for families with children or couples. There's so much more to see than you'll probably even have a chance to get around to if it's a hot day. If you're lucky you'll get to see a couple black bears among other things you'd be surprised to see like owls, otters, hawks, and even a couple bald eagles. It's a great alternative to a zoo with all animals in rehabilitation that would need the help otherwise. Expect a lot of walking, the land is incredibly expansive.

Nature & Parks

Located in historic Church Hill, Libby Hill Park offers scenic views of Richmond's skyline and a variety of activities such as benches, tall trees, and a bike trail. The park is perfect for a picnic or for taking in the sights from atop one of Richmond's hills.

One of the best places to view the Richmond city skyline and James River! I love visiting this park with some Sub Rosa or Proper Pie in hand. Peaceful place to sit, take in the sights, and exercise (yoga, walking, running, or aerobics). Nice place to walk the dog, too. Plenty of green space to lay down a picnic blanket or grab a seat on one of the many benches. Parallel parking is available around the perimeters of the park. Good accessibility for folks of all abilities. There are several tall stairs on the side of the hill facing the river. Lots of folks use them to exercise. If you go down the stairs, you can also connect to paths that go alongside the James River in both directions-- towards downtown and east past Rocketts Landing on the Capital Trail.

Libby Hill Park is very nice and scenic, we went here to watch fireworks and were honestly more impressed with the park than the explosions. There were stairs and sidewalks to help navigate down the hillside, and a gorgeous view of the city. Look forward to hanging out here in the future

Libby hill park is absolutely one of the best parks I go to! It’s usually pretty full on a nice day but definitely not as bad as Monroe. My friends and I love having picnics and putting our hammocks up here 😆 There are also picnic tables so you can enjoy your lunches or morning breakfast here too!The neighborhood around it is pretty nice too! There is always easy parking and people are nice! If you are looking for a view it’s a nice place!

Myan Le — Google review

Nice little park that overlooks the James River and Richmond. Saw a couple people having picnics, and others using the steep stairs down the hill to get in a workout. There's parking along the street, some picnic tables, and a porta potty.

Mariah — Google review

The park offers an astonishing view of Richmond, where you can see the river and downtown in a single glance. I visited during sunset and it was truly a breathtaking experience. The area has ample parking space and it's great just to stroll around the neighborhood. The place is home to many historic buildings worth seeing. I highly recommend visiting this neighborhood.

If you want a quick lil stroll but also a good little cardio workout, this will be perfect for that. They have steps to climb up and down and trails with some steepness.

Absolutely love this park. Great views of the city ans plenty of spots to sit for a while and chill!! A top place to visit in my book, favorite place for photos!

Darin Partterson — Google review

Beautiful park. I use the stairs to exercise sometimes and I hate it, which means they're great. 😅 According to my GPS, the stairs have just about 100ft of elevation, so great hiker training. Anyone who wants to relax could easily bring some takeout and a blanket here to sit on the lawn and watch the sunset. It's a beautiful spot! (Don't worry the staircase/hill are optional) 😂

Megan Connolley — Google review

Nice, quaint park with excellent views of Richmond and Rocketts Landing along the James. Street parking, fountain, picnic table or two, benches. Beautiful houses nearby for a fun walk through the neighborhood too.

Libby Hill Park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Richmond, offering a breathtaking escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The park's crowning jewel is its stunning panoramic view of the city skyline and the James River. Perched atop a hill, Libby Hill provides the perfect vantage point for capturing the sunset or simply soaking in the beauty of the river winding through the city. It's a photographer's dream, and Instagram-worthy moments are practically guaranteed. The well-maintained trails winding through the park make it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful jog. The lush greenery and historic architecture add to the park's charm, providing a sense of serenity that's hard to come by in an urban setting.Picnic areas are scattered throughout, making it an excellent spot for a weekend outing with friends or family. There's also a playground for the little ones, adding to the park's appeal for visitors of all ages. One unique feature that sets Libby Hill Park apart is the iconic staircase, reminiscent of the famous scene from "Gone with the Wind." Climbing to the top is a bit of a workout, but the view from the belvedere is well worth the effort.Parking is readily available, and the park is easily accessible, making it a convenient destination for both locals and tourists. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, Libby Hill Park is a must-visit destination in Richmond. Highly recommended!

This is a beautiful park with plenty of paved trails for biking, running, or walking. It overlooks the city of Richmond and the James River. It's also thoughtfully designed with flowers, trees, and even a fountain! A beautiful place to just enjoy the sunset. There was plenty of street parking available when I visited on a Sunday, and sewing how large the park is, I can't imagine it being difficult to find parking somewhere along it.

Sohna Kunnath — Google review

Great park to hang out at and have lunch. It was a lot prettier and more interesting when they had the statue. Now, the statue area is just weeds and a few scrub bushes, but so much for solving the social problem.

Beautiful view of Richmond and the James River in a casual setting quiet Park nicely trimmed and well kept

Ronin Yeti — Google review

Nice viewpoints of the city and the James River. Water fountain, sidewalk trails, street and lot parking. Very peaceful, lots of couples on dates and people walking their dog.

Pamela Donnelly — Google review

Peaceful park located within a nice neighborhood with several historic houses. Honestly compared to big cities in the Northeast there is not much in the Richmond skyline. But the view is very unique to the city as it used to be an industrial area.

Hoa Duong — Google review

Liberty Hill Park offers a picturesque view of the city skyline, making it a serene spot for relaxation. Also the steps provide an ideal setting for a workout session.

Charles Clark — Google review

This is probably my favorite park in Richmond outside the JRPS. The views here are spectacular, the history is amazing, the park is old, and the amenities are fabulous. Even the surrounding neighborhood is arguably the most historically and culturally interesting in the city. If you're in Richmond for any reason, this is the place to visit.

Libby Hill Park is a must-visit for anyone in Richmond. The panoramic views of the city skyline and the James River are truly breathtaking. The park's historical significance adds another layer of interest. Visitors can learn about the early days of Richmond and the story behind its name.

Bakery

Sub Rosa Bakery, located in Richmond's historic neighborhood of Church Hill, is a popular bakery known for using traditional Eastern Mediterranean methods to craft breads, pastries, and tarts. The brother-sister duo owners mill their own stone-ground flour from locally-grown grains and bake everything in a wood-fired oven. Customers can expect a dedicated following and quick service with delicious breakfast options like chocolate croissants and pastries filled with fig and Manchego cheese.

This place is amazing. I was first suggested this bakery visiting a local friend a couple years ago, and have since been unable to NOT swing by hoping for my favorite pastries to be in stock whenever I’m in town. The things you love will almost always sell out, making them even more of a hot commodity — and I’m glad their price shows for it because it’s absolutely worth it; I’m grateful they have managed to keep going through the pandemic when other small shops have been unable, and the real proof of their success is in the [croissant bread] pudding. Again, they will most likely sell out of your favorite pastries, so get up early or check online often to get what you want. Their coffee is great too!Personal favorite: Cherry Pistachio Croissant—though I haven’t had anything I didn’t like.

Kyle MacQuilliam — Google review

This is a bakery for bread lovers. Small, artisan bakers who use a wood fired oven. The line thing is odd your first time visiting but it's worth it. (Given the size of the place and the layout limiting people inside makes sense)We bought a Classic loaf and a sesame rye. These are naturally leavened breads but don't expect an overly tangy bite like San Francisco style. These breads are more French in style. As you see in the photos, the cell structure is great with a good crust to crumb ratio. The flavor is wonderful. When in Richmond, do yourself a favor and stop by this bakery.

Kitchen Boy — Google review

I recommend any pastry or bread when thin layers. Like croissant. They are so crispy!! Their soft bread is good too but the crispy ones are exceptionally good. I had pistachio cherry croissant and bread pudding and decide to eat croissant in place and pudding for to-go, and it was a very good choice.

Ellie Sohn — Google review

Super delicious and flaky pastries, with both sweet and savory options available. Easy to call in and order ahead. Their bread loaves are also really great. You really can't go wrong with anything you order here! Just be careful because the pastries tend to make a mess wherever you eat them.

Vanessa Dieterly — Google review

Efficient and friendly staff. The whole place smells amazing. We ordered a fig & cheese croissant and regular croissant. Both were excellent. For me, the plain croissant was possibly the best one I've ever had. We got the sub rosa classic loaf fresh and was so happy to see it come out of the oven, onto the shelf and then get packaged for us to take away. Very happy experience.

Marissa Alvarez — Google review

My wife and I loved this little spot. My wife said multiple times that it's the best bakery in the US. It definitely was delicious, so much so we went two days in a row. I've never had a currssaint that tasted that good and was that perfectly made. If your anywhere close to Richmond you absolutely need to stop by. I promise you will not be sorry.

Clinton J White — Google review

The bread and pastries at Sub Rosa have no business being so good - it might be worth the drive from Charlotte alone! Pro-tip: if you know what you want, order online ahead of time so you can skip the line and make sure they don't sell out beforehand.

Alyssa, waywardblog — Google review

The pastries and coffee from this shop were absolutely amazing. They have a brick oven at the back of the bakery and they were pumping out warm bread and pastries while we sat drinking our coffee. It also has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Make sure to prepare for a line if you’re going during the busy hours. Definitely worth the wait!

Justin Dahse — Google review

I love bakeries, and I love a good croissant. Richmond has plenty of great options for croissants, but believe me when I say that Sub Rosa Bakery has the best croissants I've ever had in my life; specifically, the Miller's Wheat croissant. The Miller's Wheat croissant is not greasy at all, yet still has so much crispyness on the outside, and the perfect amount of chew on the inside. To this day, I just have not had a better plain croissant than this, anywhere in the US.With that said, the other options here are also super tasty. Fig & cheese croissant is a family favorite, and my wife and I always get two Pain Au Chocolates for both of us, which has plenty of chocolate without being overbearing. My wife also loves the cappuccino here and says it's the best she's ever had.

Usman Khan — Google review

Excellent wood fired bakery. Their pastries are one of the best I've ever had - flaky and mouth watering flavor combinations. Tried the lamb borek, greens & feta tart, fig & cheese croissant, and sour cherry pistachio pastry - all are top quality pastries. I'd eat them everyday. We also purchased a pide flat bread and whole rye bread. The taste and smell of both breads are out of this world. Will definitely try other breads.Online orders and pick up only - wasn't an issue for us. You need to text your name when you arrive and they bring your order outside. I'd prefer picking up at a specific time rather than waiting a long line anyways. Enjoying the pastries at tbe Libby Hill park is a decent option if the weather permits.Would highly recommend ordering from this bakery and for sure will return.

Burcu Duran — Google review

There are so many amazing pastries. There are seasonal specials featuring high quality ingredients. This seasonal item was a peach tart. The pastries are super fluffy and soft on the inside with a flaky crisp on the outside. Highly recommend a visit

XiuQin Saunders — Google review

Loved this place! First the pastries are amazing! The savory mushroom and the fig and cheese were both fabulous. The dough has the right amount of crunch and flakiness on the outside making the required mess of delicious flaky crumbs that good croissants make while still having a soft inside. SO GOOD!! The pain au raisin was also good but not quite as good as the others -- the filling might be a little too wet/heavy so the pastry soaks doesn't quite get the same flakiness as the other two pastries. As for the bread, we got a day-old standard loaf for half off and it was also great. It has a wonderful sour note to it and a crispy crust. The only thing is that the hydration level might be a tad too high because the inside was still a little wet so it was the tiniest bit gummy when slicing even though it was obviously fully cooled since it's day-old, but a little toasting helped that. Will definitely return!

Alexandra Smith — Google review

Our Sunday happy place! We haven’t tried everything yet, but everything we have tried was yummy. We used to go after church, but now we go first😂. Just one more thing to be grateful for! This pesto, roasted tomato ,feta croissant is savory and magnificent! Pretty sure I won’t leave without one unless they run out. Hardworking, friendly staff makes waiting in line a small price to pay. Great coffee too!

Tee Cee — Google review

Evrim and Bianca at Sub Rosa made our morning! I'm proposing to my girlfriend today and planned a day of cute surprises. I emailed the Sub Rosa team and they quickly followed up with an email and call to say they're happy to help. They reserved a table and put up a balloon/present I had brought the day before. And, of course, the pastries were all amazing (we had actually been the week before but were thrilled to come again and try something new). Thanks for being so accommodating, easy, and kind with this request!!

Hannah Schuele — Google review

It's worth the wait! Their pastries are so buttery and flaky and delicious! Their sourdough bread is top notch. I want to come here everyday!

Jade Tran — Google review

Among the finest bakeries in the world. Worth a trip regardless how far you're traveling from. The products here feature heirloom and ancient grains freshly milled and baked in an old school wood fired oven. For context there aren't any bakeries in the NYC area that are capable of achieving this rare feat. The result is a uniquely rich and wholesome flavor profile. With masterful hands also comes a crust and crumb that features long lasting satisfying textures that retain their composition for many days after purchase. Make sure to add a miller croissant to any order to ensure you are realizing the full experience. Coffee here also reflects the philosophy of their bread program collaborating with local roasters with defined expressions and honest sourcing, packaged into fine espresso based drinks!

D S — Google review

Stopped in for a coffee and was overtaken by the wonderful aromas! The croissants were warm, flaky, and down right delicious! Since I work within walking distance I’m sure to be a coffee regular!

Whitney Smith — Google review

Went in around 8:30 AM and there was a long line already.Got butter croissants and chocolate croissants. Some of the best croissants I ever had, flakey and delicious. Will definitely be my stop during every visit to Richmond going forward. The only disappointment was there was a limit of 8 on the number of items we could buy. There were other items I wanted to try but couldn’t.

V — Google review

Visiting from out of town had a latte and a chocolate croissant that we ate in, and picked up some biscotti for home. There was a bit of a line out the door but the food and coffee and friendly faces were well worth the wait.

Located in the heart of historic Richmond, The Jefferson Hotel has beautifully appointed guest rooms that are perfect for a relaxing stay. The on-site restaurants and pool make it a great place to spend a day, while the health facility makes it an ideal spot for travelers looking to stay in good shape.

We had a fabulous time. Our Thanksgiving was outstanding. Our server Ben was the most accommodating and professional. The matre'de found us a seat as their tables were all full. My husband says it was the best service we have received since we met six years ago. Thank you to the wonderful greeting and all staff that made our Thanksgiving special. Happy Holidays

The hotel shines like a jewel in the heart of Richmond. I thought the opulence of the entryway, along with the small museum showcasing the history of the building were well worth the look.We came in for tea which we reserved 4 months in advance for Valentine's weekend. The tea was pleasant and the ambiance was particularly upscale. Wait staff wear masks which was appreciated! We were told that wait staff isn't allowed to take pictures, the hostess also declined. No problem. The dill and cucumber sandwich didn't really feature any dill and was watery. The spinach tomato wrap was dry and cakes were pretty basic. The sandwiches with ham were afterthoughts, why not add a mustard on that? You nailed the chicken salad and the savory scones were fantastic. We were told that everything is made in house which I can see, but the execution on the sandwiches needs work. 3/5.

We stayed the weekend in the Jefferson Suite for our wedding weekend. It exceeded my expectations and was definitely a 5 star experience. All the original architecture (yet upgraded features) and the balcony made the room. The hotel staff was exceptional and accommodating. They found us a spot for the buffet brunch despite not having a reservation. We will definitely be back.

We had an excellent time staying here. We were in town for our corporate holiday party which was hosted at the hotel. The room service was exceptional, the rooms were clean and spacious and the hotel itself was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Their was no detail missed in our customer service during our stay, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us in ways we did not even know we would enjoy! It was really an awesome experience all around I would absolutely go back and stay again!

The afternoon chocolate tea was amazing. Plenty of food for two people and a great selection of tasty treats. Our waiter was very attentive and answered all of our questions. I received a special treat for my birthday, which was a surprise. The hotel is gorgeous and they have lots of antiques and memorabilia that you can see. Everyone was very friendly.

After living in Richmond about 30 years, I finally returned and was able to stay at the Jefferson for the first time. Wow!! It was worth it all. We just got back from staying at some crazy nice places across Europe and we agreed that the Grand Premier Room beat them all. More comfortable, great space, loved the design, incredible room, awesome staff, great experience - all around our favorite place in many years. I can't wait to return to Richmond so we can do it again. We also did the Sunday brunch. You have GOT to add it in. I doubt I would do it again, but I have no regrets doing it once. Pro tip: there are tons of food stations. Don't get in a long slow line. Just move to a different area and come back. There is so much awesome food, why waste your time when you can be enjoying time with your friends.

Amazing historical landmark hotel in downtown Richmond. Absolutely worth it even just to go to dinner, have some drinks, or do a holiday or Sunday brunch meal. Make sure to have reservations for the meals, otherwise you may not get a table. The building is stunning. The appetizers at the Lemaire restaurant were just delicious. I would recommend the deviled eggs… the were incredible.

Christy Whitten — Google review

I loved everything about this Hotel. The lobby, courtyards, the rooms were extraordinary with a TV embedded in the bathroom mirrors and a walk-in closet. The Lemaire has views of the quaint neighborhood. The showers and toilets have separate doors, and each floor of the hotel has its own sitting/waiting area at the elevator. The rooms are 600 sf with high ceilings and chandeliers. This 5-star hotel is comparable to the Waldorf, and both the staff and food, though a tad limited, were top-notch and service is fast. I'll definitely be back without telling a soul I'm in town. 😉

I recently attended a conference held at the Jefferson Hotel and I was impressed. The staff was friendly, professional, and extremely accommodating. I enjoyed reading a good book while soaking in the giant bathtub and all the exquisite desserts they offered on-site.

Danice Stetson — Google review

Not quite the five-star experience that I was expecting, however an extremely nice gentleman has followed up with me since my stay and I’m happy to report that all of the following concerns have been addressed.Upon arrival, there were no bellhops to help with luggage. Valet was $30 on top of your stay. It should be included, if staying at the hotel. The Lounge made a mistake and ran our card on another person’s tab, however this was immediately corrected and two of our drinks were comped for the inconvenience. Our room service request was overlooked and breakfast was never delivered that the hotel would want to rectify that as well but all I got was an overpriced bill and mediocre apology.More irritating is that our room bill was slid under the door, giving whomever the opportunity to grab our request but didn’t. Our order was still hanging on the door the next morning, and it was placed on the door well before midnight the night before. The pool was advertised to be 86 degrees however it was not warm, at all. There was quite a bit of dirt and grit collected on the bottom of the far end.Our 8:15 dinner reservations had us seated in a tiny room right outside the extremely noisy lounge. If you have reservations and want a more quiet experience, ask for a table away from the lounge.Overall, it was a lovely hotel and I hope to stay again in the future.

We had our work Christmas party here and it was so beautiful! We had a room to ourselves. There was an omlette bar, carving station, and a variety of other breakfast items and sweets. The gingerbread house display was amazing. I recommend just popping in for a look around at the very least some time. It's so worth it at the holidays!

Amazing, beautiful, historic, grand hotel situated in an old, established neighborhood near downtown Richmond! Absolutely gorgeous. The building and grounds steeped in history. When you step into the beautiful, ornate lobby you feel instantly transported back in time. My visit to this wonderful hotel was purely by accident; my colleague and I had lunch at a nearby Cafe and during our walk back to the Graduate Hotel ( the hotel where we were guests) we found the amazing Jefferson Hotel and decided to take a quick peek inside. My colleague and I, unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to be a guest at the Jefferson nor did we visit or observe the private guestrooms. However, my colleague and I were simply astonished with the magnificent architecture and decor in the lobby, registration area and adjacent common areas. I have no doubt the guestrooms and other hotel amenities are just as splendid! The large, grand staircase is a must see! Located on the lower level, in the corner of a large, open common area you will find a small, but very interesting "mini" museum containing fantastic memobelia and photos of the hotel's history. Although I was not fortunate to be registered guests of The Jefferson Hotel, I was fortunate to visit the common areas of this magnificent hotel. Perhaps in the future, I will be a registered guest at the Jefferson. I totally recommend visiting this exceptional hotel! If you enjoy and desire grand, luxury accommodations in a hotel rich with history and fame, The Jefferson Hotel is a MUST!!

Service at The Jefferson is excellent from the moment they see you drive up. Everyone is friendly and thoroughly professional. We were greeted by valets, bell hops, then the concierge with smiles and anticipation to make us comfortable. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The bathroom is large with a comfortable bathtub. Decor throughout is elegant, historic and interesting. Lemaire has a delicious menu. I come from oyster country and found the southern ones as good as our server recommended. Walking around the hotel is inviting; I wish I could have stayed longer.

We had my daughter’s Bridal Tea at the lovely Jefferson Hotel on Friday, September 8, the day before her wedding. Arranging this event for 30 people from out of town could not have been easier, and the entire staff was wonderful. From the complimentary co*cktail menus to the special Tea offerings for the children in attendance, the Jefferson made this a time to remember. The food ( and tea offerings) were delicious, and the spectacular Jefferson hotel was the perfect place to start this weekend celebration. Thanks to all!

I checked into the hotel with a group of five other guess. I requested a feather free room due to my severe allergies (this request was submitted in advance of my arrival). I have been waiting in the lobby now for over an hour while the other guests I traveled with were immediately provided rooms. I checked back with the desk clerk and she kept saying "check-in isn't until 4 PM". Meanwhile more guest are checking it and being provided rooms immediately! I spoke with the concierge and the manager on duty. Absolutely no help! I would leave if I wasn't here with other colleagues. Very unpleasant experience! I would definitely not recommend this hotel!!!

Finally made it to The Jefferson for Sunday brunch and it was delicious. Breakfast side favorites: potatoes, biscuits and sausage gravy, and I loved my made to order blueberry pancake. Lunch side favorites: the ribeye (well done piece) was so tender and flavorful and I enjoyed the potato and leek soup. Dessert favorites were the carrot cake and red velvet cake; making them mini was the perfect idea! Our sever Jaden described the different stations for us and recommended his favorite dishes. He checked in on us periodically and kept the champagne coming and I so so appreciate him taking pictures for us.

Had their Sunday Brunch. Beautiful setting but Way over priced for the food and selection. Seafood soup was the worse thing on the menu. The fresh salmon for bagels was good. Carving stations and omelets were good. But not $75.00 pp good.As a matter of fact, they upped the price while we were eating and wanted us to pay the new price even though it published still at $75.00 pp on the website. We refused. Refund still hasn't shown on my credit card for the overcharge.Tajay was a great server. Professional. Glasses remained full and always had a smile on her face.

My niece took my two sisters and me for tea for our birthdays. We had never been, but she had. We loved the little sandwiches and wraps, scones, cakes, chocolate covered strawberries and more. They gave us each a slice of cheesecake for our birthday...dream cicle! Yum! We had 6 different trash to choose from. We loved the ones we choose. The server, I am bad with names, Sierra, I think, was very attentive, explained everything well, took pics for us,and made sure we boxed up all of the goodies we didn't have room to eat. We got more goodies in the little gift shop before we left. I look forward to doing it again!

Holy moly!!! We went for the Santa tea yesterday, and it was nothing short of magical. I felt like I was in the Plaza in NYC. It was SO FANCY! Valet parking made me feel so fancy. Then you walk inside and it is literally breathtaking. Every inch of the place was decorated with the most beautiful holiday decor. Pictures and words don't do it justice. The huge gingerbread house was incredible. The service was wonderful. The food we had was great. But even more than that, the magic of seeing my daughter get to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus can't be beat. I will never forget the memories made there, and I hope to be able to make this a tradition for our family. Job well done, Jefferson staff!

Authentic historic old word hotel that maintains its high quality standards throughout. The best in Richmond by far. Large rooms, spacious corridors, cavernous reception area and open atrium, filled with period details that have been meticulously restored and maintained. 5 star staff checks all the boxes. A real pleasure, a treat and this hotel puts so many others to shame.

Botanical garden

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a year-round locale with 50 acres of themed gardens, dining options, and a classical domed conservatory. The garden is recognized as one of the top botanical gardens in the country and offers children something to do on a hot day. The garden also has a variety of dining options for adults and boasts beautiful landscapes.

Amazing experience!! Loved it...all of it. Went on a Saturday afternoon. Went to see the Orchid Show, which was fabulous. It was a wee bit crowded inside the conservatory but it was worth it. The orchid displays were worth the trip. It's late winter but the gardens were beginning to show color. The gardens have really nice walkways. Nothing strenuous. You can even walk on the grass! Children were rolling down the hills. This is a great place for kids. I look forward to my next visit in April; early Spring...everything should be in bloom or almost. Highly recommend this treasure.

I should have known how busy this place was going to be on free-admission July 4th day but I decided to brave the visit on what has to of been one of the hottest days ever! But the Garden was prepared with lots of volunteers helping in the parking lots, providing water refill stations, manning information stations, everywhere! It's a beautiful place with amazing gardens full of just beautiful plants from all over the world. On this hot day, my favorite spots were of course the shaded gardens and the butterfly exhibit did not disappoint. A must visit for those who love gardens, nature, water, and just vibing with what we all wish our home gardens would look like.

We went to visit a few weeks ago and fell in love with the garden. All of the staff were kind and polite. The gardens were well kept. The inside and the restrooms were very clean. We enjoyed our visit so much we became members. Highly recommend Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

What is not to love? There is something for everyone here. The walk ways are very accessible, plants and trees are often labeled. The butterfly exhibit and orchid greenhouse is peaceful and fantastic. The rose garden is fragrant and the rotating art installations are unique and interesting. The children's play area has recently been redone and overlooks the lake. The Japanese garden is relaxing and the multiple fountains are well maintained. Come any time of the year especially in Sring and for Christmas.

Rebecca Courtright — Google review

This was an absolute highlight of our vacation. The garden has approximately 50 acres of land filled with an exceptionally diverse plant catalog with a Children’s Garden, a Butterfly Garden, multiple children playgrounds, refreshment areas, and other hands-on activities. The staff are very friendly and attentive as well. There’s plenty of free parking and the prices are extremely reasonable. This is a definite must visit when you are in Richmond!

Trent Heck — Google review

Today on our visit the gardens were pretty empty. There were quite a bit of things in bloom and it was a nice peaceful walk around the grounds. The grounds overall were extremely clean and well taken care of. The staff that we had interactions with were extremely nice and able to answer any questions we had. This was a really cool place to get to walk around and look at all the plants. All of the plants were labeled as well, incase you wanted to know what something was.

A top ten garden. Changes with every season. Beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs. Well thought out paths. Large children's section, wonderful arboretum. Always has something special going on to see.

Really like this property. Great place to take pictures. Enough variety to keep you busy for awhile. We go during the holidays when they have the Christmas lights up, and it's dog night. Highly recommend checking this place out.

I had the opportunity to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on 3/26/24. What an amazing place. So peaceful. So beautiful. I went a little crazy with the photos but just couldn’t help myself. Definitely a 5 star location. I’ll certainly be back particularly if I need some grounding.

Bill Werling — Google review

The bonsai exhibit is very cool. We went in late February so there’s not much to see other than the orchids in the greenhouse. The area is very clean and well-kept. The staffs are friendly and welcoming.

Due Chuenchujit — Google review

Went on a whim as a field trip with our two year old. Everyone loved it! Spent about 3 hours there. There were flowers and plants I've never seen in real life or pictures before. Hopefully these pictures help entice you to check it out for yourself; but they won't to do it justice. Not to mention, a huge butterfly room. A must see/visit. Go yourself, with friends, or with family. It's beautiful. Kid friendly as well. They do events, too, apparently, so we will be looking for that in the future.

This place is absolutely beautiful! Whimsical gardens bursting with life, So much to see and do. The aromas from all the variety of flowers was gorgeous. Such a wide variety of plants to see and explore. I also love how all of them are labeled as to what they are...very educational. Will definitely be going back.

Simply stunning. Each exhibit and individual garden was stroller-accessible. I had the most lovely time ogling at the various flowers and plants. We’ll be definitely returning in the fall!

Admission was free on Labor Day, walking through the entire garden took around 2 hours, stopping several times to take in the scenery. This is one of the most family-friendly places I've visited, the park is filled with high-quality experiences for children. For 96° summer afternoons, water and sun protection are a must! Some highlights for me were the live music performance at the historic Bloemendaal house, the Incanto sculptures by Kate Raudenbush scattered throughout the park, and the see-through beehive at the Kroger community garden. The gift shop was also quite large and the old ladies working there were very charming. Lovely visit overall!

Tony Lin — Google review

Stunning facility. The different stops are each breathtaking in their own special way. What a great presentation of biodiversity. The pathways are mostly flat but there are some hilly sections. There are so many beautiful flowers, trees, cacti, succulents, and other types of plants. There is a cost for admission ($17 as of 08/2023) but they offer military discounts. Well worth the visit.

This is one of my happy places. I've been a member for years now, and it's always a peaceful place to recharge my emotional batteries. The staff are always kind and friendly. I head up to the conservatory (not sure if that's the right word) first to look at the orchids, and the butterflies when they're there. Then I do a leisurely lap around the grounds, listening to the water, looking at the flowers and enjoying the turtles and fish that are there. But not the heron. There is a heron that shows up sometimes. He is my nemesis, and he only seems to show up when I don't have my big camera with me.It's nice to be able to sit on the porch of the tea house and just exist for awhile. They also have classes (I've taken one about spices and another about rice) that are amazing. Highly recommend this place.

Visited the garden for the holiday lights. The grounds were beautiful and captivating. The process to purchase the tickets and to check in was very easy. There were restrooms upon entry. There was a lot of places to take nice pictures. There was. O food or drink allowed due to having a restaurant. There was apple cider and hot. Chocolate available. But the hot chocolate was so hot my. Holder. Could not drink them h til we got home. So maybe if there was an option to have it cooler that would be good. Otherwise I was pleased.

A visit to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Festival of Lights is a holiday tradition for our family. Enjoy a festive, colorful walk after dark through the garden. This year’s light show is beautiful. The kids love the magical holiday garden. It’s truly a great experience for the whole family. The path is paved and can accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. There are some hills to navigate. Don’t forget to visit the conservatory to see the giant Christmas tree. There is also an awesome indoor toy village with trains running through.

SAS — Google review

Came here for the first time during the Christmas light festival. The decorations were beautiful, though initially felt like a sensory overload. Plenty of parking available. Well run event. And the ground had hard top so it was easy for everyone to navigate.Super chilly night and wish I had brought a warm beverage like many others. Now I'm curious to see all the plants inside and definitely will have to come back for a daytime visit.

Nola — Google review

We visited in January and it was a delightful experience. Lunch at the cafe was tasty and exactly what we needed after a few hours of walking around. I can't wait to visit again when more flowers are in bloom and enjoy some wine with lunch. 10/10 would go again!

Carole Rickman — Google review

I went to the show today, and it was phenomenal. The Orchids bloomed beautifully. The people were friendly, and the rain hindered nothing. I enjoyed myself. I will visit again.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum is a museum dedicated to the history of the Holocaust. The museum has many exhibits that illustrate the tragedy of the Holocaust, from the social and political climates that led up to it to the after effects. One of the most impactful exhibits is a real German goods wagon that was used by Nazis to transport prisoners to concentration camps. Due to its graphic nature, children under 6 are not recommended for visitation.

This was a fantastic museum. It was a lot bigger than I expected it to be, very educational, and it's laid out in storyline format which I think made it easier for my kids to understand and learn about the Holocaust. There is a parking lot directly across the street, which is convenient. Highly recommend visiting.

Faron Poser — Google review

There's so much to see it's difficult to take it all in spending just a few hours. It's a must see! Oh, they respectfully ask for a $6 per person donation. It's well worth it.

Keith Winnick — Google review

This was an amazing experience! Everything looks as if it were the actual event that took place. Very authentic and breathtaking. It's definitely worth going to see and it's A FREE TOUR!

Mycala Gray — Google review

Loved this experience! A few of the exhibits seemed to be under renovation, so I didn't see everything. What I did see was informative!

Courtney Bowman — Google review

Very informative visit. I've been to the one in D.C and I think this museum really emphasized the holocaust on a personal level through the many different experiences that people had during that time. The museum was free and accepts donations, the exhibits were detailed and some gave you a sense of what it would have been like if you had been there yourself. Not all exhibits are finished however but they do have signage indicating they are working on them. It's a museum worth visiting and I definitely recommend if you are in the area!

Bo Benton — Google review

This is Richmond's own Free museum about the holocaust. Only in existence here and DC. I have not been to the one in DC but this one is located in a very cool old brick building downtown next to the locks. Parking is to the right of the building in a lot. There was some construction going on so it will be interesting to see what's being added. The exhibits are done in a way to really invoke how things were in those times. Definitely worth a visit to remember those who lost their lives due to hate and people in power who used fear and death to impose their beliefs on others. Such a sad time and we don't want repeat situations.

Stacy Litchford — Google review

It was interesting well worth donating $6 for each person ..

Pam Pearce — Google review

They have free parking, free admission, although donations are encouraged. Before you enter the museum you will be greeted with the Güterwagen “Goods Wagon”. That’s merely just the beginning. As you walk through the museum it gets depressing and sad. There are many life size models and equipments that make you more able to feel the reality of what happened. A great amount of information is there, very educational.

Angelina Song — Google review

Holocaust. A portrayal of our inhumanity that festers inside many still today. It's has more scenes than items from this Era but no more less important that any other Holocaust museum. Entrance is free and they have a decent collection of literature of this event. I highly recommend Maus or Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi. Another fascinating aspect of this museum is that it is inside the Libby Prison from 1845 and you feel it.

Marco — Google review

Very informative and important to historical events.

Sonya Harris — Google review

The staff were very friendly, the museum was extremely clean and very informative. Will recommend.

Denise Benson — Google review

One of the better Holocaust museums we have visited - specifically the care to detail the personal stories and experiences of the victims and survivors.Free parking and free admission, too.

Ryan Smith — Google review

Amazing place. Very nice staff and very informative on a part of history that isn't talked about enough

Jesse Lake — Google review

The Virginia Holocaust Museum documents a profoundly important story with relatively modest resources in a compelling and undeniable manner. I live in DC where I have been through the UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM a number of times. The VHM in Richmond offers a valuable and unique contribution, reminding me of Hannah Arendt's haunting warning about the "banality of evil." The VHM displays and artifacts about the awful logistics of death reminds us of the threat of rising fascism among us today in 2023-2024. THANK YOU to the VHM for your righteous work and wise curation. Also, even if you don't have time for the museum, the relatively large gift shop has an excellent selection of books, mezuzahs and socks (and a plush rabbi).

James Werner — Google review

Great museum. Jaw dropping but also inspiring. Free but 6 dollar donation is recommended.

Marloncito Moodie — Google review

The Virginia Holocaust Museum is a must-visit destination for those seeking a profound understanding of the devastating consequences that fanaticism can unleash. The museum's exhibits powerfully convey the tragic realities of the Holocaust, offering a haunting glimpse into the depths of human suffering and the importance of remembrance. Through thoughtfully curated displays and educational resources, the museum fosters empathy, encourages critical reflection, and underscores the imperative of preventing such atrocities from happening again. By exploring this somber chapter of history, visitors leave with a renewed commitment to tolerance, justice, and the preservation of human rights.

Went here a long time ago for a music show called Rising Appalachia. Never knew it existed until that random evening finding out about a last minute event here with a band I liked. Beautiful building, sad stories and history, but there was some sweet music playing throughout that evening to lift the mood after the initial entrance.

The Agecroft Hall tourist attraction is a Tudor-style mansion that was brought over from England in the 1920s and now stands in Windsor Farms, Richmond, VA. The mansion and its gardens are great place for families to visit and explore.

Fantastic place to visit in Richmond. I traveled an hour to tour this place, and it didn’t disappoint! I got in free because of the military, but tickets aren’t expensive-just make sure to book them ahead. All staff I talked to were very informed and gave a great tour. The gardens and house are absolutely beautiful. I would suggest going in the spring when everything is blooming, but I went in February and it was still a nice time to go.I totally recommend this place because the history is super neat and it is absolutely gorgeous!

Victoria O'Tool — Google review

We went for Shakespeare's Birthday celebration and it was AMAZING. The rain did NOT dampen anyone's spirits. Just made it feel a LOT more like England LOL. I truly enjoyed the fact that there was so many activities that were FREE I was able to come away with a few lil souvenirs for my OWN birthday weekend as well! We had a GREAT time and it was a pleasant surprise that my hubby gave me to bring me to the Bards party.

Beautiful day for a walk on the wooden trail. Daffodils just starting to show off. Beautiful and tranquil. Interesting to see the gardens before all the growing gets underway. Enjoyed taking advantage of the last free day to visit the gardens.

Agecroft Hall is a 16th century manor that was originally in Lancashire, England. It was dismantled, crated and shipped to Virginia and reassembled in a suburban location if Richmond by tobacco heir Thomas C. Williams. It is now a house museum.

We were there for an evening with Henry VIII. The setting was perfect as far as hostoric touches. The event was a complete pleasure. I cannot wait to come back!

Kim Wiggins — Google review

If you like history and historical buildings, this is a brilliant spot to visit hidden in an extremely posh neighborhood in Richmond. The house and gardens are exhaustively maintained and in addition to just looking at everything in situations, they have lovely tours, educational lectures, and fun things like Shakespeare on the lawn to do in the evenings. I highly recommend keeping an eye on the website for various happenings like the Christmas season food tour and such, it's well worth coming back repeatedly.

Mere — Google review

If you love Tudor architecture, gorgeous gardens, history, and art you will enjoy Agecroft. The tulips are in full bloom right now. I've gone during the fall and the gardens are just as breathtaking, making this historical mansion a great place to visit year round. The mansion tour itself was more than I expected. The staff was highly knowledgeable and our group was captivated by all their facts and information. Every room in the mansion has stunning time period pieces. Great place to bring family while they are in town or if you love historic homes and gardens.

Crystal Hughes — Google review

Gorgeous space and plenty of exploring to be had. The events are so well coordinated and their shows are approachable and casual. Of you have time, go and have a beautiful adventure with them.

Kevin Storm — Google review

Absolutely gorgeous. I went for their Christmas event and the activities were great. The house in itself was beautiful. I would like to go back when there is not an event going on so it's less crowded and I can explore the manor more. I know there are a lot of fine details that I missed.

Auto Race Tracks

Richmond Raceway is a 1.5-mile, D-shaped racetrack that hosts the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series. The racing takes place on concrete floors and can be heard over a mile away, making it difficult to follow the action. There are shows held at the track when races are not being held, but fans should be aware that there are cover charges that vary per show.

Not my first nascar race, but first time here! Outstanding facility!! Well taken care of with friendly staff! Parking (lot 4) was great! Wasn't too hard to get in or out of! Great place to see a race!

Mason Neel — Google review

We had a great day at the raceway! I shot hours of video that will be on my YouTube channel of the same name. What to expect first time going to a Nascar race as we did on Sunday April 2 2023. We had the full experience with access. I heard it was loud and even came prepared with ear plugs but next time I will have noise cancelling headphones or something more powerful. See my video for more helpful tips. The facility is very nice, seats were great, bathrooms great, food good but outrageous expensive as to be expected. $8 for a tea or lemonade, $5 for can soda. More info in video.Security wasn't overbearing but I did get refused entry the first try for having my GoPro selfie stick. It is clearly shown however that these are not allowed. I did bring my DJI Osmo 5 gimbal with extending mount into the facility but was careful to not extend it and block any views. I got some fantastic footage right by the track as the cars went by. It's quite an extreme experience with the noise, wind and heat they produce as they go by.I highly recommend the experience at least once even if your not a big Nascar fan. I'm familiar with it and used to watch it more back in the Earnhardt Jr, Jeff Gordon days.Any live event like this with so many people is going to make for a rough time getting out. We sat about an hour without moving while trying to exit the facility. Again this is to be expected and only so much can be done to alleviate this issue. Now having seen a race end I would like 5-10 minutes prior to the end of as soon as the winner is determined.

Eddie Gebhard — Google review

Awesome place to see a race. All the local people are super nice and lots of stuff to do for the whole family. Plenty of parking within easy walk to the track and great view of the track from majority of the seating. Definitely going back!!

Randall Daniel — Google review

This place has shows when races are not being held. I went to the RV show to look at campers now that I’m retired and looking to travel more. Bathrooms are well kept. Walking around on concrete floors is exhausting and aggravating to legs and backs. Cover charges vary per show but there are military and senior discounts available. When the races are going on, you can hear them over a mile away!

Elizabeth Stelling — Google review

Camped at Main RV lot. Close to track with full hookups. Have seats in the verdana section, with the race moved from night to mid afternoon. You get a lot of sunlight in the direction of the car's traveling. That usually happens late in the race.

My 3 daughters wanted to get this experience for my husband for Father's Day. It was a wonderful experience! We purchased the 32 lap driving experience with a 3 lap ride along! He enjoyed it, but wished they would let you go faster!! Would definitely do this again. No fee to spectators, but you can purchase ride alongs on site. Our driver Rusty was great! He even gave me an extra lap!! All the staff were friendly and very helpful. Great family experience, even the grand kids had fun watching the cars!! Thank you, we looking forward to returning!!!

So it was my first time ever going to a NASCAR Truck Race. It definitely was a great experience even tho the racing wasn’t the best. It was green flag racing for 214 laps which isn’t normal but not the tracks fault. The staff was very polite and helpful and it was a great experience. The tickets were like $75 a piece and we got the fan ground pass which was another 70 and I got to meet a ton of cool drivers. This was definitely one of my fav nascar tracks I’ve been to. 5/5 stars

We went to the spring race this year and had a blast! The raceway is very family-friendly, so there are people of all ages that attend (and military friendly. There are lots of extras for those in/affiliated with the military). Like most raceways, the food is expensive, so make sure you plan ahead (we brought lots of toddler-friendly snacks and water). No matter where you sit, you have a good seat. We are very excited to go again next year!

First time at a Nascar race. Free parking, coolers are allowed. Nice bathrooms. Ushers to direct you to seats. Concession stands and merchandise stores available. I forgot to bring ear plugs so, I ended up spending $80 for 4 people. I won't make that mistake again. Food prices weren't horrible. Overall, this was a fun experience.
